The Great Inland Way

We have traveled this road from Dubbo to Cairns. We took 2 weeks to get here but we could have spent months exploring more interesting places on the route. In the past we have always bypassed Dubbo as we always thought it expensive. We had already been to the Zoo, so this time we got out the bikes. An off road bike track took us to a winery near the town. The Dubbo Pipe Band entertained [I cannot resist a man with kilt, sporran and bagpipes] as we tasted the fruits of their labour. [The wine, I mean]

Most of the time, we did not seek out Caravan Parks. We looked for flat, gravel spots not too exposed to the road traffic and had no trouble in finding them. We were really starting to get the feeling of freedom and adventure as the orange sun set on the red earth and the sparse vegetation- All without a building or person in sight. When stopping in a place for a few days we head to the information centre. The people in these places bend over backwards to be friendly and helpful. This contrasts with Cairns. I asked three simple questions and got replies like, "We don't do that. This is my last copy. You get it elsewhere. No, I can't photo copy it for you. There is no information on what is happening. Try another information centre." Was I cranky? I don't think so. Cairns is not crying out for tourists like the outback. If you want friendly people the outback is the place. And they are funny. Andrew, "I've just got to know you and your leaving." Dwayne, "My wife hasn't seen this place. I'll bring her up at the weekend." Andrew, "Make sure you handcuff her. I'm a bit of a goer. I'll be 70 next week and got prostrate cancer." Dwayne, "Make sure you take the Viagra quickly otherwise you could get a stiff neck."

The road itself leaves a lot to be desired. In NSW there are humps and dips so you have to travel slowly if you do not want to wreck your vehicle. But there isn't much traffic and hardly any caravans. In QL you come across one lane sealed roads. Not so good when you meet a road train. A man in Roma said, "They are earning a living while you are enjoying yourself. Pay them respect. Don't slow them. Stop and let them come around. Give way and prevent a stone through your window." It's hot and rainy in Cairns. I wonder what the lush tropics will bring? Something boring to begin with-wash and clean our home inside and out. It will only take a day and no lawns to cut.

Good to hear from you. You seem to be covering a fair amount of territory pretty quickly. You have a few family admirers following your movements. Hope the weather is warmer where you are. Reasonable days here, but some cold nights. Just had 12mm RAIN. Wow!! Enjoy!

What's happening?
Gone on the wallaby and lost touch with the keyboard?
Must be having a great time - too busy perhaps. Got to Burren Junction and Lightning Ridge then Bourke over the last two weeks. Had a great time with L, D & two ankle-biters.
Back hard at it now.

C'mon, your turn..............
